As one travels through the region, storks are frequently circling far overhead, even in the larger cities such as Strasbourg. Twenty-five years ago, the bird had dwindled to less than ten nesting pairs, owing to problems with migration from Africa. However, a recent repopulation program has restored the beloved white stork to the region, with hundreds of pairs nesting on treetops and roofs of the medieval villages.
