Storks are the regional icon of Alsace -- cherished for centuries as the conveyer of fertility and luck to any home where it nested. As one travels through the region, storks are frequently circling far overhead, even in the larger cities such as Strasbourg. Twenty-five years ago, the bird had dwindled to less than ten nesting pairs, owing to problems with migration from Africa. However, a recent repopulation program has restored the beloved white stork to the region, with hundreds of pairs nesting on treetops and roofs of the medieval villages.
